A Ford F-450 monster truck stopped on a rural road “rolling coal”, or blowing large clouds of dark grey diesel smoke.
This seminar will explore the specifically fossil-based dimension of contemporary patriarchy through the lens of the Energy Humanities. Our starting point will be a close reading and discussion of the article “Petro-Masculinity: Fossil Fuels and Authoritarian Desire” by Cara Daggett, Associate Professor of Political Science at Virginia Tech. A shortened Spanish translation of this text has been published in Atlas Cultural de la Energía (Martínez, Santiago, and Vindel, 2025).
Following a critical synthesis presented by Carmen Madorrán (Professor of Philosophy, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) and Emilio Santiago (Research Scientist, CSIC), the seminar will open into a collective discussion around questions such as: What specific forms does patriarchy take within the petrocultures of the Anthropocene? What are the key features of contemporary petro-masculinity? What political effects is it producing? How can we trace the reactionary imprints of our energy matrix in the far-right’s current backlash against feminist gains?
The seminar will take place on April 9 at 11:00 a.m. at the Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales (CCHS-CSIC), Room María Moliner (First Floor, Module F), C/ Albasanz 26, Madrid.
