Book Launch: Atlas Cultural de la Energía (Catarata, 2024)
With Jaime Vindel, Emilio Santiago, and Gemma Barricarte
Held on the occasion of the publication of Cultural Atlas of Energy (Catarata, 2024), this event brings together the authors to discuss the book’s critical perspective on the complex entanglements between energy, culture, and politics in the context of the climate emergency.
This Atlas offers a revealing look at how fossil energy—the fundamental driver of industrial societies—has shaped not only material development, but also the imaginaries and narratives that structure our understanding of progress, freedom, and well-being. The book explores the socio-ecological implications of the energy transition and challenges the reductionist frameworks that dominate contemporary debate. Adopting a critical stance toward technocracy and energy determinism, it calls for a renewed understanding of the interactions between nature and culture, granting imaginaries a decisive and transformative role.
As such, the Atlas emerges as a vital tool for understanding the dilemmas of the ecosocial transition through the lens of energy humanities. It argues for an approach to energy not merely as a resource, but as an aesthetic, cultural, and political dimension that has shaped the world as we know it.
