esteticafosil.csic.es<\/strong> <\/a>is a web platform developed by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) dedicated to sharing various research projects. Its name comes from the essay Fossil Aesthetics. Energy Imaginaries and Eco-Social Crisis<\/em> (Arcadia, 2020), which inspired the Special Intramural Project Fossil Aesthetics: A Political Ecology of Art History, Visual Culture, and the Cultural Imaginaries of Modernity<\/em> (PIE 202010E005). This and other related projects hosted on the site aim to disseminate, within the Spanish context, the ongoing conversations around energy humanities<\/strong><\/em>, bringing a perspective grounded in Southern Europe.<\/p>\n

What is fossil aesthetics<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fossil aesthetics<\/em> is a concept that explores how the metabolism of industrial societies\u2014and the imaginary relationship we build between Nature and Society\u2014is shaped aesthetically. It refers to the imaginative projections that link industrial modernity to a specific discursive construction of energy. In this view, the images we generate of nature and the universe are not merely descriptive or evocative\u2014they shape how we see and experience the world. These images often intertwine fascination, desire, and power. They speak to how we sensorially engage with the world\u2014but above all, to what we do with it.<\/p>\n

What are energy humanities<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Energy humanities<\/em> is a relatively new field within the broader framework of ecological humanities. It explores the cultural, political, and social dimensions of energy, challenging the view of energy as merely a physical entity. The field emphasizes the links between petromodernity<\/strong>\u2014the modern era\u2019s dependence on fossil fuels\u2014and the cultural imaginaries tied to industrial progress. It also investigates how industrialism and its imaginaries relate to other energy forms, such as hydroelectricity and renewables.
