Ecologies of the Moving Image - Estetica Fosil

Ecologies of the Moving Image

Ecologies of the Moving Image: Film Studies Seminar

April 27 to June 8, 2021

Cultural Center of Spain in Mexico/Online

Estética Fósil organizes, in collaboration with the Cultural Center of Spain in Mexico (CCEMx) and the CSH Division and Department of Arts and Humanities of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana – Lerma (Mexico), the seminar Ecologies of the Moving Image, a space designed to think about the ways in which cinema, especially contemporary cinema, intervenes in the relationships between cultural imaginaries, politics and the environment. In a scenario of ecosocial crisis that affects us unequally, and in which differences of race, gender, class and territory mark the line that separates a mere abstract awareness of tragic situations of exploitation, violence and dispossession, cinema, as a cultural practice of fossil modernity par excellence, is presented as an ideal field to think about aesthetic strategies that question, resist and reimagine the relationship between culture and climate crisis.

The seminar is organized in seven online discussion and reading sessions (via Zoom), which propose different ways of thinking about the relationship between film, artistic practice and political ecology. The sessions are led by filmmakers, curators, and researchers from various disciplines, who share theoretical reflections, reading strategies and methodological approaches to film practice and its dialogues with other spheres of cultural production and social action.

Coordination: Miguel Errazu and Alejandro Pedregal.

Speakers, in order of participation: Ana Vaz and Raquel Schefer; Federico Windhausen; Lourdes Alonso Serna, Elena Pardo, Violeta Núñez and Beatriz Millón; Davani Varillas (Colectivo Los Ingrávidos) and Almudena Escobar López; Isabel Seguí and Lorena Cervera; and Jaime Vindel.

You can see the complete program (in Spanish) here.
