Ecological Archives
Archivos Ecologistas (ARCHIECOS) is a subproject of the research projects “Fossil Aesthetics: a political ecology of art history, visual culture and cultural imaginaries of modernity” (PIE 202010E005) and “Energetic Humanities: Energy and socio-cultural imaginaries between the Industrial Revolution and the ecosocial crisis” (PID2020-113272RA-I00, HUMENERGE). ARCHIECOS shows a partial cut of the exhaustive research we have been doing on the documents and images that make up the archives of the environmental movement located in the different geographies of the Spanish territory.
It is an archive of archives in process, which does not aspire to present a complete version of each of these documentary repertoires, but to bring to the public domain and in digital format contextualized fragments of them. And it does so with a double objective: on the one hand, to encourage new research on the history of the environmental movement in Spain, with special emphasis on its visual productions and communication devices. On the other hand, to promote social and institutional interest in the preservation and dissemination of these archives, so that their digital socialization promotes the conservation and consultation of the archives in physical reference sites. In this sense, although several of the archives shown here already enjoy these institutional conditions, in other cases they are dispersed documentary collections, which we have partially recomposed through the research work carried out by the project.
In relation to the conditions of use, ARCHIECOS is an archive of archives developed for research and teaching purposes, so the use of any of the images and documents it contains for commercial purposes is not authorized without the express consent of the owners of the rights. The researchers of the project have consulted with those responsible for the archives in order to obtain their consent to show the images and documents we have collected. The same policy has been followed in relation to the authors of these images and documents, although after a diligent search it has not always been possible to locate the rights holders. In these cases, anyone wishing to clarify the authorship of the documents may contact us through the form at the bottom of this web page. Authors of images that appear without authorship and who prefer that these documents not be shown on the ARCHIECOS website may also do so. Finally, we encourage researchers who wish to use the images and/or documents to contact the archives and/or authors directly to agree on the terms under which they may do so. The ARCHIECOS subproject acts in this sense as a mediator of the content of the archives, whose dissemination on the project’s website is supported by various types of agreements, permissions and licenses, but is not responsible for possible uses of the images and documents that violate this principle of rights management.
